How Much Budget Do You Need for Meta Ads? Honest D2C Guide
How much to spend on Meta Ads in India? Realistic D2C budgets for testing, scaling, and when you're ready — no agency fluff.
The question every founder asks before we start: “Piyush, how much should we spend?”
Agencies usually answer with “it depends” and then pitch a big retainer. Let me give you real numbers from managing ₹1Cr+ for Indian D2C brands.
Short answer
- Testing phase: ₹25,000–₹45,000/month. Enough to test 2–3 angles and get signal.
- Early scaling: ₹1–3 lakh/month, but only on proven winners.
- Not ready yet? If you can’t do ₹25k/month for 2–3 months without panic, fix your funnel and creatives first — ads will only amplify the problem.
Ads need data to learn. Data costs money. There’s no ₹5,000/month hack to profitability.
The maths (simple version)
Meta needs ~50 conversions per ad set per week to exit learning. Work backwards from your CPA.
Example: your target CPA is ₹500. 50 × ₹500 = ₹25,000/week per ad set, or ~₹3,500/day.
Can’t afford that on Purchases yet? Totally normal. Start by optimising for AddToCart or InitiateCheckout (cheaper events, faster learning), prove the angle, then move up to Purchases as volume grows. I explain this in the learning phase guide.
How I split a starter budget
Say you have ₹30,000/month (~₹1,000/day). Here’s what I’d do:
- 70% testing — 1–2 angles, ₹700–₹800/day. Broad audience, 3–4 creatives.
- 20% retargeting — ₹200/day on hot 7-day visitors. Cheap conversions, lifts MER.
- 10% reserve — for iterating the winner’s hooks in week 3–4.
No scaling campaign yet. You haven’t earned one. Scaling starts when something gets 2+ purchases under target CPA — then I move it to CBO and raise 20–30% every few days (scaling rules here).
When to increase, when to hold
Increase when: MER is stable for 2 weeks, you have 2+ winning creatives, and frequency is under 2.5. Raise 20–30%, wait 3 days, repeat.
Hold when: Only one winner exists and it’s fatiguing. More budget on one tired ad just raises CPA. Fix the creative pipeline first.
Pause and fix when: Tracking match quality is below 7, landing page converts under 1.5%, or Shopify revenue doesn’t match Meta. More spend on broken foundations is just burning money. Check tracking setup first.
The mistakes that waste budgets
- Spreading too thin. ₹1,000/day across 6 ad sets = nothing learns. One angle, one ad set, enough daily spend to get 10–15 events a week minimum.
- Scaling overnight. 3x jumps reset learning. Slow and boring wins.
- No retargeting. Paying for clicks and letting warm visitors bounce. A ₹200/day retargeting ad set often pays for itself several times over (my structure).
- Quitting in week 2. Days 1–14 are data gathering. Judging profitability on day 5 is like judging a harvest a week after sowing.
So, are you ready for ads?
You’re ready if: your product sells organically or on marketplaces, your landing page converts, you can invest ₹25k+/month for 3 months, and you have (or can shoot) basic UGC video. This playbook is your starting point.
You’re not ready if: the site is broken, there’s zero creative, or any ad spend means missing payroll. Fix those first — ads will still be here.
Takeaway
Budget isn’t about spending big. It’s about spending enough to learn, then scaling only what proves itself. Start lean, test properly, scale winners slowly. That’s how small budgets become big revenue.
Not sure what your budget can do? Tell me about your brand — I’ll give you an honest answer, even if it’s “not yet.”
FAQ
What is the minimum budget for Meta Ads in India for D2C?
₹25,000–₹45,000/month for meaningful testing. Below that, learning is too slow and most ad sets never exit the learning phase.
How much of my revenue should go to ads?
Most profitable D2C brands I see spend 15–30% of revenue on ads (which means 3–6x MER). Start from your margins backwards — your target CPA is your ceiling.
Should I hire someone with a small budget?
If your budget is under ₹50k/month, hire for setup + system (tracking, structure, creative process), not full management. You need a foundation first, not daily optimisation.
