UGC video vs polished studio creative split test for Meta Ads

Founders ask me this all the time:

“Should we shoot UGC-style videos or invest in proper studio creatives?”

Honest answer after managing ₹1Cr+ across health, wellness, and food brands: you need both, but for different jobs.

Here’s what I’ve actually seen, not theory.

TL;DR

  • UGC-style video wins cold prospecting for most D2C brands. Lower CPMs, higher thumb-stop rate.
  • Polished statics and founder videos win retargeting and high-ticket trust moments.
  • The format matters less than the first 3 seconds and the proof.

What the data looks like on my accounts

Across the accounts I run:

  • UGC prospecting CTR: 1.2–1.8% vs. 0.7–1.0% for generic studio carousels.
  • Retargeting statics with reviews, comparison tables, or guarantees lift conversion rate by 15–25%.
  • Winner lifespan: raw video lasts 10–21 days, polished evergreen creatives last 30–60 days.

So raw wins attention. Polished wins trust. You need attention first, then trust to close.

When UGC wins

Cold audiences scroll past anything that looks like an ad. A selfie-style video with captions doesn’t trigger that filter.

UGC works best when:

  • You’re reaching cold audiences who’ve never heard of you.
  • Your AOV is under ₹1,500 and it’s an impulse buy.
  • The product needs a quick demo — food, skincare, gadgets.

The formula I give creators: hook (0–3s) → problem → demo → proof → CTA. One angle per video. No rambling.

Example hook that worked for a food brand: “I stopped ordering 4pm Swiggy after trying this.” Simple, specific, real.

When polished wins

Now flip it. Someone has seen your ad, visited your site, maybe added to cart. They’re interested but not sure. A shaky selfie won’t close them — proof will.

Polished works best for:

  • Higher AOV or sceptical categories like supplements and health claims.
  • Retargeting: review walls, before-after, certifications, comparison tables.
  • Sale and festive moments where a premium look lifts trust.

One health brand I worked with: UGC got the click, but a clean static with “Lab tested • 12,000+ customers • COD available” closed the sale in retargeting. Same offer, different job.

How to test both in 14 days

Don’t debate this in meetings. Run this test:

  1. Pick one angle. Example: “sugar-free snack for office hunger.”
  2. Produce 2 UGC videos + 2 polished statics. Same offer, same landing page.
  3. Give each creative equal spend. Kill anything with no add-to-cart after 1.5x your target CPA spend.
  4. Move anything with 2+ purchases below target CPA into your scaling campaign. Then iterate only the hook.

Full process here: my creative testing system.

A brief template you can steal

Send this to any creator or designer:

  • 3 hook options: one question, one bold claim, one negative avoidance (“stop doing X”).
  • Proof: 1 number, 1 review screenshot, 1 demo clip. Every creative needs all three.
  • CTA: one single action. And the offer must be visible above the fold on the landing page.

That’s it. Most bad creatives fail because they have no hook or no proof — not because of video quality.

My takeaway

Stop picking a side. UGC gets you cheap attention. Polished turns that attention into money. Run the 14-day test on one angle and let purchase data decide your mix.

FAQ

Do UGC ads still work on Meta in 2026?

Yes, especially for prospecting. Raw, creator-style video still gets higher thumb-stop rates and lower CPMs than generic studio ads for most D2C brands in India.

When should I use polished studio creatives?

For retargeting, high-AOV products, and trust-heavy categories. Review walls, guarantees, and comparison statics close warm audiences better than UGC.

How many creatives should I test per month?

At least 8–12 per angle per month. Creative fatigue hits in 10–21 days, so your pipeline has to outpace it.
